Invisalign is one of the newer and more popular orthodontics techniques. Clear aligners are clear, removable, plastic orthodontic braces usually worn for an hour or so a day to change teeth misaligned due to wear and tear or for small cosmetic corrections such as lengthening or shortening the teeth or a crooked bite. These aligners can be made out of a variety of materials ranging from carbon fiber to clear or colored plastics. The materials are usually designed to be comfortable to wear and easy to remove and replace.

Invisalign has its advantages and disadvantages like most other orthodontics. Perhaps the biggest advantage of invisalign is that it is very quick and painless. Once fitted, all that is required of the patient is to remove the aligner, be sure to floss right before the session and be in front of the mirror before the first appointment. Patients are normally given a plastic aligner to wear for the first appointment and then they will receive a prescription for either an invisalign or clear aligner to be taken home. The dentist will measure the patient's mouth area prior to the first visit and then send the appropriate aligner out to the patient.

The second advantage of invisalign is the removal of the need for crowns, retainers or veneers. The traditional method of straightening teeth involves the use of crowns or retainers which are very expensive and are custom fitted. When the aligner is removed, the patient will not have any need for retainers for a minimum of three years. Invisalign is also more beneficial to those with severely chipped teeth because they can receive the same results with Invisalign but without the need for retainers.

The third advantage of invisalign is that it is much less painful than traditional methods. Even adults who are suffering from serious tooth decay or those with an overly large gap between their teeth now have the opportunity to get their teeth straightened with Invisalign. With metal braces, the patient may have to wear them for several years before they see any benefits from the treatment plan. Invisalign is far more comfortable than wearing braces and allows patients to immediately notice the difference after the first appointment. A new dentist may not even need to be hired to implement an Invisalign treatment plan if a patient already has an open and honest discussion about their dental situation.

The fourth advantage of invisalign is the ability to have straight teeth without having to wear braces or take veneers. There are two different aligners that can be worn at the same time: sticky clear aligners that cause the teeth to move when the wearer smiles; and invisible clear aligners that align the teeth together but do not stick when the wearer smiles. Each type of aligner has its own benefits for the patient and is comfortable for them to wear.

A quick word of advice: If you decide that you need to have your teeth straightened, talk to your family orthodontist about the Invisalign treatment plan. They will be able to point you in the right direction of an orthodontist who uses Invisalign. You may even find that the first office that you see uses this technology, so there may not be another set of orthodontists who can use this technology to give you your perfect smile. In the meantime, ask your friends and family members for recommendations. If all else fails, search online for more information on Invisalign and clear braces.
